The Habit of Drinking Water
First, I am a Chinese lady and I’m gonna to share my experience in culture shock.
When I was in the university, I often took part-time job as a waitress in Starbucks.
One time, due to the culture shock, there fell into an embarrassing situation. In the afternoon, about ten o’clock, a gentle foreigner man came into our store. When he opened the door, I provided a service for him. I said,”Welcome, sir. Over here, please sit here. Sir, what can I do for you? Then, he gently told me that he wanted to have a cup of water.
This was it. In our country, we often like to drink boiled and hot water. Thus, I gave him a cup of hot water. When he took that cup, he was shocked. Then he smiled to me and said ,” It’s okay, but I would like to tell you what I want . Not hot water, but cool water.” Hearing this, my face turned flushed. And I showed my sorry for him. He expressed, “it doesn’t matter.” I prepared a new cup of cool water for him again. When I gave this to him, he called me. And he gave a detailed introduction about the drinking habit and food culture of his country.
From that time, I feel very grateful to him, because he let me realize the importance of understanding the culture shock. And this experience gives me a chance to know more about the western culture.
